My two emphasis areas are Art and VT – Visual Technology. I found it to be a bit of a challenge to locate and come up with some sources that would be good, with my two emphasis areas, for a research presentation about community development. As I have given this more thought have determined that art is a good area to research for community development. Art is a fantastic way in which to help people to discover their hidden talents and put them to good use for the benefit of developing a better community. Having been sick last week I was not able to actually spend time at a library looking for sources, but I did manage to find some online sources that could be useful.

I like the idea of relating art as a way to better a community. It's really cool how in L.A. for example, they have been able to take graffiti and use it to create community murals and give artists an outlet to showcase their talents. That would be a really good topic to present on due to the fact that so many times art is displayed negatively in a community, but it can be used to make a community more appealing through individual representation of community members.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate how you pointed out some ways that VT can be used to influence communities. I love the idea of using photography to document change and progress within a community. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, right? I think it's interesting to think about how visual art around us influence us and our behaviors. Certainly they do influence us, and advertisers know that all too well. It would be interesting to see how one could use the same tactics deployed by advertisers to bring about a positive social change within a disadvantaged community.
